October: A Month of Digital Literacy and Design

October has been a busy month at Wavemaker. This month, we’ve been working harder than ever to offer digital training and support to a range of people across Stoke-on-Trent, from teaching them digital future skills, to introducing them to the digital world and showing them how they can begin to use technology.

We welcomed our latest intake from PM Training- a group of young learners who were considering their next steps and their future career prospects. With this PM Training group, we covered a range of digital skills over multiple sessions including 2D design and website creation. These digital skills are invaluable for young people looking to enter a range of fields and are versatile so that they can give young people an added advantage as they look to enter the evolving, and more technology-driven, world of work. Aside from learning digital skills, learners also have the opportunity to improve their overall confidence when presenting their creations to the rest of the group, and feel a sense of achievement as they’re able to take away evidence of their hard work and new digital skills.

October also featured ‘Get Online Week’. The week coincided with engagement sessions we helped to host. We worked with Amity Hub- an organisation which supports asylum seekers and refugees- to teach basic digital skills to their clients and improve their overall digital literacy. During these digital inclusion sessions, we taught clients how to get online and how technology could be used to make life easier.

Both groups- both PM Training and those from Amity Hub- showed real enthusiasm and interest in learning more about technology and digital skills, and left the sessions feeling more empowered. It made us appreciate that no matter the learner, if given the opportunity to learn everyone can benefit, no matter age or background.
